Back in the day, a brave Georgia pharmacist named John Pemberton, who got injured while being a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, found himself hooked on morphine.

To kick the habit, he decided to brew up something special.

Enter Pemberton’s French Wine Coca, a fancy-sounding drink inspired by a popular coca wine called Vin Mariani.

Yes, you read that right – it had coca leaves.

And a bit of booze, because why not?

But the story gets even better.

When prohibition hit his county, Pemberton had to ditch the alcohol.

He then whipped up a nonalcoholic version, and his trusty bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, suggested the name “Coca-Cola.”

Genius, right?

Pemberton sold his ownership before he could see Coca-Cola become a global sensation.
